donkeys, dolmades and dancing...

It is our last full day on Santorini and Sunday sees us packing up and heading to Heraklion on Crete for one night and then to Chania and the Anastasis apartment waiting for us.

Yesterday saw us on an old sailing vessel and touring the islands, complete with volcano island....molten lava rocks in jet black, very cool....hotsprings that we got to by jumping from boat ladder and swimming through the Aegean sea to the cove holding the hotsprings, ...well....warm springs..., a village of 250 people on another island Thirissa, and finally ending at the port of Oia once more ( we were there for sunset on Tuesday by car) on Santorini, a donkey up, up, up ( yes I rode a donkey and they were quite friendly :)...and an evening of good food, fantastic views and Dolmades once more. mmmmmmmm....dinner was, dolmades as afore mentioned, greek salad, saganaki, and pork souvlaki along with the Santorini wine we have come to love.

I am looking forward to European influences that Crete has to offer although sad to leave the white stucco and blue domed architceture of Santorini.

Our hosts at Stelios Place pensions have been amazing and we felt so at home there.

This island is a mystery of old world, mixed with new world tourism, sunsets, views and friendly gregarious people.

Off we set to new adventures and hopefully I can upload some pics on Crete....

greece

Whew...hello...I am here in Santorni and iternet is challenging, and I am just now atching up to share the latest.
Greece is freaing amazing. We all arrived safe on the aftermath of a storm but it has been sunny and beatiful ever since and today saw us at Ancient Thira...a HUGE ruin from 6th C onwards, that survived the volcano ....Akri Tiri and umm ...the reason I came to this island ,is ummmmm.... CLOSED...UGH! hOWEVER, Ancient Thira delivered and then some.

We have been pool dippin and beach walking, sun worshipping and gods and goddeses seaking, and this afternoon was filled in a local taverna off the beaten path with a group of wine soaked men who insisted on buying us ouzo, wine and dancing for us, complete with bottle dancing ( on their head upside down) and glass smashing..." a good day! The beer drinking burro may be my fave though!

It becomes increasingly more difficult to get online and I can not use my computer here so alas, no pics...but believe me, thy are magnificent.

Spain was beautiful and I was sorry to leave my friend K and her family, but alas, the volcano called and I answered.

This island is a mystery of back alleys, walkways and ruins.....the mountain goats would once again take their hat off to me for the summits I hae climbed...OI

I will write more once settled somewhere on my own computer....meawhile..ADEEOS...from the beautiful island of Santorini with wonderful faces and smell and I may never eat anything but dolmades again :)

Windmills, sand, water. cliffs, ruins and sky...that is Santorini...more from the road and Crete to come!

Spain.....ahhhhh....Spain.......

I arrived in Asturias after S fabulously made my life easier, by driving me to Stansted and with plane only mildly delayed,( 30 minutes) it saw me in Asturius by mid day.
What an incredible area. Lush and hot and green. K and family are even more wonderful in their own setting tan in Canada, and what a setting.
I am so honoured to be staying in such fantastic homes so far.
K's home has been constructed by she and her hubby's hands from the ground up. Sitting high above the town of Gijon and the ocean, the view is extraordinary. Truly breathtaking!!!!!!

Cuddled in with the girls and did some faery crafts :) then had a quiet evening and good sleep.

Today was the day for the town of Ovieddo.....whew.....will post more but wanted to update things and add some pics.

We hiked up a loooong steep trail to San Maria del Nicaranco, a 4th century, preroman ruin and was it worth the hike....wowowowowowowowowo!

I spent a lot of time running my fingers over the hand tooled chiseled stones and am amazed at how well preserved it all is.

We also went to San Miguel de Nicaranco as well.....similar but not quite as grand. The lacework stone was stunning however.

There was also much food, and beverage....did you know that here, 12:00pm is Vermouth time>?
Yup, casks of vermouth that are mixed with a variety of other yummy things, wione, fruit etc.....are kept and the base drink has existed for years as they just keep topping it up. That and Tortilla are a good way to kick off lunch :)

More to come...must sleep for tomorrow's adventures.....

Chile...ala, "Vegan-A-Go-Go

I have my friend Sarah Kramer's fabulous new cookbook with me as I am travelling..."Vegan a-Go-Go".

Today I got to use the recipe for chile.....shopping at tesco, I was able to easilly find everything needed and even though the cottage offers some antiquated appliances and small pot cooking, I split nto two pots and created sheer deliciousness for a gathering of friends tomorrow. Sarah Kramer rocks once more.....Of course I couldn't have done it without my helper "Murphy" reading the recipe for me...

Headless Horsemen and Treasure......hmmmmm

I am staying in a part of Norfolk that is steeped with history, mythology and ghost stories...the following is copied from a local tale about the treasure and the key,
( the door handle is on the rectory right across from us here at Reading Room Cottage, behind the beautiful red brick wall covered in Ivy. I am in the thick of it as they say...)

"Callow Pit- source, notes and queries, John Glydem, "The Norfolk Garland"

On the boundary of moulton River and Cantley parishes, there was a cavernous hollow known as the Callow ( or caller ) Pit
( some say it's the pond on the west side of the southwood road crossroads at TG394058), which in olden days was used as a hiding place for smugglers and outlaws. By night the ghost of a headless horseman rides around it before galloping off to Callow Spong a mile away and vanishing.

Although the water was very dark, locals often talked about dragging the iron chest of money they could see just below the surface. One night two men from Southwood tried, and managed to hook the iron ring on the end of the chest. After hours of struggling with its weight, it broke the surface, and one of them cried out " We've got it now, and not even the Devil himself shall have it!" At that a cloud of sulphurous vapour enveloped the pool, a long black arm erupted from the water, grabbing the chest with claw-like fingers, and a fierce tug of war ensued.

The Devil proved too strong, and the chst sank into the water, never to be seen again, and the men were left with the iron ring from the chest. They took it home and fixed it as a handle onto the door of St. Edmund's church at Southwood, where it could be still seen as recently as 1890, but is now the door handle at impenhoe Church."- end quote

Spooky hey :)

ol' Man River....

...truly just keeps rolling along!

S and I spent the day in Wroxam, a lovely community on the Broads partaking in some tourist fair of: chips with the swans...mmmm chips and malt vinegar, gifty stores and then aboard a river boat ride for two hours is the twinkling sunshine.

We started our day though with a walk through "top field" with Angus. You step out of Reading Room Cottage and are immediately amongst fields of hay, barley and mud, but also ancient barns and the ol' rectory directly across from S's cottage. Me and my new "wellies" enjoyed it, visited some horses and giggled at Angus gallumphing through the fields hoping for a hare to pop out.

A quick brekky and we were off for our day in Wroxam and the Broads.

The Broads are a huge water way of shallow rivers and wetlands, that go on for miles and provide much of the reeding used for the thatched cottage roofs locally.
A wetland full of birds, fish and folk who come to appreciate a slower pace and old fashioned living.
Some of the most beautiful old estates, windmills and old dodgers sitting astride their ancient three leg chairs with a fishing pole are only visible by boat along the reeds.

Our boat, an old paddler from the 30's took us along a sunkissed day and to a place where the modern requirements of living are left behind. Sigh...it was just lovely. We had a hilarious announcer that had a Norfolk accent and a lisp and sounded like the priest in "the Princess Bride" There are a lot of s's in the world,....*giggles*

Upon landing once more on terra firma, we made our way to Wroam barns, just in time for closing but a little place much like Matticks Farm and did a bit of a shop...I came home fudge :)

A peaceful night is to come...fire and furries and friends......

Castles, Cathedrals and Dungeons....oh my!

Twas Monday and it saw S and I on a park and ride bus into Norwich town and in search of ancient things.

Turns out we were in the right place :)
We first ventured into Norwich Castle....sitting high on a hill, looking forebodingly over the people and town, the castle dates back to 1121.

(PIctures are to come, still working out internet access at S's house and am on her pooter at present)

The sheer immensity of "the keep" or main area of the castle, was overwhelming...the feel of the cold, rough hewn stone work, the high.......high..........wow...really freakin' high celing and beamwork...the tiny slivers of windows letting in a bare minimum of light....it was easy to see the lords and ladies in their tapestries, velvet and chainmail wandering about with glasses of mead and meat on tables everywhere.

My favourite bit was walking along the upper catwalk and looking at the armour and tapestries. Beautiful.Breathtaking really. Hard to imagine living there though, not very cozy! S and I had many giggles including riding a chariot and scaring each other with the wax heads in th cages. It was set up to show the life of the prisoners inside the main floor of "the keep"r...not a pleasant life that's for sue.

We took a guided tour of the dungeon,....peeeewwww...it stunk really bad... led by a colourful and enthusiastic young man with a flair for the really nasty dungeon and torture stories.

As this castle was used as a prison from 1300's onwards, the energy was more than a little oppressive.

Pitch black but for a few lights, torture devices with wax people in them and complete with the sound of moaning.
Yes, I really did hear some god awful thing moaning down a tunnel. One other member of the tour heard it but no one else, we shared a grimace but could not utter the words outloud of "ghostly noises".....it raised every hair on my body and almost sent me running..i toughed it out though....it was an intense adrenaline rush and offered everything a good dungon should.
What a place to house people......ugh!

We then wandered the town, and sat amongst all the old flint buildings having a bevvie, and cornish pasty watching all the people...walked through Norwich market and bought the biggest bouquet of sunflowers ever in the history of the world, and made our way into the cathedral....wowowowowowowowwoowwoowwo....

The cathedral was built around the same time as the castle and has housed nuns, a school and many lives and characters passed through its beautifully carved environment.

The cloisters were lovely,...imagining the penguined habits of the nuns appearing and disappearing behind the ornate arched openings..a serene and beautiful place to end our day.
Norwich itself has a pace much like Victoria, laid back and touristy, but no too much.

Next stop....river boat cruise along the broads......a paddle boat is in the offing.......I will be singing Ol' Man River you can be sure.

Sunday, September 7

Limpenhoe...Ho!

I sit here listening to the fall of English rain, inside a red brick cottage dating back to the 1700's .

I slept very well in my upstairs bedroom looking over the garden and conservatory. I awoke to the call of songbirds and have that cheesy morning, break of dawn, classical music piece now stuck in my head......will find the title...

Across from us is a a one lane road and an ancient red brick wall strewn with ivy and overgrowth that wraps around the lane and hides a lovely old rectory.

I am staying in the wetlands know as the `Norwfolk broads. Rivers and farmlands abound.
It is a little like going back in time....you hear the echoes of hoofprints and the swishing of petticoats in the air.
You also hear the doves outside cooing on the clothing line ( wow they are huge) and the call of roosters announcing the new day.

Truly a perfect first stopover in a journey about reaching into our past.

My friend S who is hosting me while in England couldn't be more wonderful.
An ease of manner and down to earthness that is so relaxing to be around, we are in the process of plotting further journeys around Norwich this week. She and this cottage are a match made in paradise, the woolies, and boots, the leather hat for dog walking and the easy swept blonde hair add to the picture, as do the black lab " Angus" and black and white kitty "Murphy.

The cottage itself has a character that speaks to its past, a threshold across the kitchen to the living room, worn down to a valley in the middle with years of footseps going about their daily business, the twisty stairs t the bedrooms upstairs and the double doors, that allow you to open the top half, strapped in wrought iron.

Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibilty come to mind, the ladies would have been happy to have their new circumstances in a cottage like this.

My leg from Amsterdam to Norwich was a bit delyaed and after travelling for almost 24 hours, it was fantastic to see a friendly face waiting for here, even though we were an hour late arriving.

I can tell Norwich is going to be a favourite place already. We are off to a drive and a pub and then to a dinner with friends this evening.

The place where I am is called Limpenhoe and even the name conjurs horsedrawn carriages movng along the lanes.

Pictures to come..ofcourse, the converter `I borrowed is a two prong and my computer plug is 3 pronged (oops) so am on S's pooter in the meantime....stay tuned.....:)

On the road......with Kimmee

Well here I am...whew.

After a loooooooong flight in cramped quarters, I am here at the airport in Amsterdam waiting for my last connection to take me into Norwich.

It was a very calm, very easy, smooth and exciting trip so far.
A friend came and met me for bevvies in Vancouver at the airport and was a welcome distraction from the 4 hour wait. Also nice to have a friendly face see me off there as well as Mumzie and T in Victoria.

I know it is early days and things can muck up, But i found all the gates, lined up to check in appropriately and even managed an aisle seat on a sold out plane :) No issues at the security counters...hmmmm I think it may be all D's fault.

Met some older travellers who wanted to have me visit their home in France.....and another couple who are enroute to Italy.
What is it with me and nice senior folk trying to adopt me? it is really funny...everywhere I go, some nice older couple has a story to share and wants to hear mine....hmmm does that mean I am old ??????? Not willing to bet on that ,, I am thinking I have a friendly face and seemed to know the answers to their airport questions.

A couple of crazy vacationing in Ibiza girls ( in picture) joined my row and drank the flight away...lots of chat and even a little sleep. Well a very little for me...darn I just get so excited.

I am now a little punchy and tired but happy to be here and feeling peaceful about the whole undertaking.

Okay Europe, I am here and am ready to take you on....:) My confidence build with every gate I walk through :)

more to come.....

Farewell Canada

and all things Canadian for two months.

I am ready, bags are packed......furries have had a good loving up and speaking to so they know I am coming home, D has be sent off to work with squishy hugs and friends have been smooched.

I am now officially embarking on the journey to theatre's past that I have been dreaming about since 1992 and planning for 3 years.

I am aflutter, nervous, excited, worried I have forgotten something but also thinking "oh well".

Take care of this beautiful countryside til I return!

Byyyeeeeeeeeee!

next post on the road!

Tuesday, September 2

It comes...

in 3 more sleeps and I am aflutter with butterflies in my tummy, foreign phrases on my tongue and a lot of laundry , packing and sorting to do.

If I could just stop vibrating with excitment long enough to focus on the packing task at hand.....this would all be a little easier :)

Sunday, August 31

Sage-More please...

Well dear ol' Sage continues to surprise us by improving all the time and having much more comfortable mobility, getting up and down quickly, jumping ( d slowed her down) out of the truck at the beach and proving once again...she is a feisty old girl.
Her fur is coming in now again too.

She has also rediscovered food with a vengeance, and has taken to rattling her stainless steel foodbowl about by putting her paw in it once empty and banging it into the wall for more food....lolololololol!

I am extremely relieved to be leaving her like this for two months, happy and healthy ( touch wood ) and loving up life. It is a long way from where she was after the vet misdiagnosed her and put through so much crap.
I know D can handle what comes but I want her here when I come home! Please send her your hopeful healthy vibes too.

Paws are crossed and hopeful.

Ny day 2 -Broadway Bound

Whew...we made it with moments to spare, and the four of us went to Bubba Gump Shrimp for dinner....hmmmm imagine Senor Frog's on shrimpies........Dinner was really good though. "Run Forest Run!"

Then we walk through the now truly insanely busy streets, okay Mumzie was right, Monday had been quiet.
Holy crap...holy crap, there are a lot of people on the streets and all seem to be heading to a broadway show.
We are heading to "Spring Awakening" at the Eugene O'Neill playhouse.

We walk in and the smell of old theatre hits me like a familiar memory you didn't know you had.
it was just a beautiful small theatre....we settle into our seats....and wait.......I am so excited.

The show begins and I am transported. What an unbelievably edgy, minimalist, and emotional journey this show it is. I won't go into a huge song and dance about it ( ha ha, get it song and dance?) but run, don't walk if it tours to you. It is breathtaking. The sharpness of the young energy contrasted with the turn of the century text and ideas.......Oh man.,.....just amazing.

I float out of the theatre and we all agree it is the best show ever. it remains R's favourite Broadway show ever.......and he has seen a lot.

We finish the night off with martinis at a swanky lounge with chrome and neon lights and fish...I found nemo, he is alive and well and living in a tank outside the bathrooms of this lounge.

baggage...

my list is now small....and big.......one thing left..

PACK!!!!!!!

OI..............!

A week today I will be in England......watch out Queenie, here I come.

NY..day 2....Museum and subways and umbrellas..oh my!

Oh boy..I am so excited when I wake up and realize I am THIS close to Monet, Manet, Renoir, Rothko and Seurat, Gottlieb, Pollack and Oh Boy!
So, I pull out my trusty NY guide to all things arty and prepare for the Museum mile and think I can achieve visitng 4 museums in one day.

Okay stop laughing, it is not that funny!
I didn't know!!!!!!

D and I embark on the subway experience and other than getting on the wrong way, yes, it was my fault..sigh...we realize quickly and head to the Gugenheim.......so excited.........walking from station..oh boy there it is....... and I look at a sign..

'UNDER RENOVATION"

WHAT???????? nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
We go in anyway, at a reduced rate, to see 2 small ,....small....really small room of sketches and drawings and can sort of see the general architecture of the museum.

We mock a pompous tour guide discussing abstract art to an eager group of looky loo's...sigh.
I visit the round ladies room ofcourse, wouldn't miss that Miss Kramer... tee hee....and then decide to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and spend the rest of the day there....yes....I have realized 4 museums isn't going to happen...stop giggling already..i was hopeful.

We hop in a cab and then find it is ummmm right there..around the corner...oh well...we are in!
Holy crap batman! The place is ENORMOUS !
We decide to focus on the Impressionists and the Greek and Roman sculpture.
I walk in a state of emotional turbulence....the sights, the energy, the brush strokes....the colours...amazing.

D and I spend hours taking it in and discussing in hushed and reverent tones ( sometimes not so reverent..bawdy artists :) ) and I am totally overwhelmed at the magnificence of some of these paintings.
Sitting on a bench with a security guard in one corner, tourists and looky loos taking in the art through the lens of their cameras..(what is with that anyway?) I am swept through the past and into worlds I had imagined but not in full colour.

After almost 6 hours, we relaize it is time to head back to the hotel and get ready for dinner and "Spring Awakening..our first Broadway show.

I leave D at a dark entrance under construction and use the ladies...not round.... and when I come out , D is chatting up a little bird faced woman with tight, short curly dark hair...thick round grandma glasses and the best Bronx accent. She asks me for my drivers license>
"huh"
D says..."show her we are from Victoria.....
"huh. okay...pull out license......and woosh...we are immediately escorted into a preview fpr the highest subscription holders. "the money" for the Turner exhibit that is not scheduled to open for a week. Regular subscription holders were being turned away in droves yet D managed to convince her to let us in. :)
He is so good at chatting up people.:)

The looky loo's left behind, no sign visually of security guards and a lot of art officianados who you just know have money trees in their swanky apartments, and their walkers, we are taken into the world of this brilliant man who was the predecessor to all thing Impressionist.
The absolute silence....the space to see the paintings...the PAINTINGS.....oh how to describe what that was like....that feeling that we had been taken into something so special, that was such a gift. A place tourists don't get to experience.....the heart of the art world.
No one was looking through the lens of a camera.
It was amazing.

We stayed and then we had to leave in a hurry......eekkk.......mom and R were waiting at hotel.

We run out to catch a cab and woah.....there is a sideways drenching , sheeting down rain/wind storm. I buy a $5 umbrella from a dude on the museum steps, stay dry for 5 more steps and the umbrella then turns inside out and whacks me upside the head. This is not how I imagined leaving the sanctitude of the museum.

I am determined to grab a cab...I stand in front of the cab stand and stick my arm out, waving like an idiot all the while getting drenched in my white and yellow suntop..quickly becoming invisible.

I try a new tact 10 minutes later and move to where the locals kept stealing my cabs down a ways from the cab stop.....I hail.... a cab stops......I start to sit down , hand on door and seat....soooooo excited...and BAM....I am tackled by a whirlwind of fast talking aggressive, TINy New Yorker woman....she tackles me but I stand strong, i argue..."this is MY cab" she is relentless and pulls me out of the cab...seriously...out of the cab.

D is astonished as he was heading for the other door and I am pissed.....no really....really.....pissed!

I am soaking wet, more wet than any west coast storm ever.....I am late..R will be waiting and I am pissed and the cab drives away.....now what?

at that exact moment, I have my "sex in the city moment"

A long dark black limousine pulls up to me.....I expect Big to appear..really...but instead a window rolls down and an angelic voice says " Do you need a riode?"

Do I????? hell ya I do.....
I ask how much to Times Square and amazingly it is about the same as a cab...we hop in.
sigh...the luxury, the DRY TOWELS! the leather seats....sigh...it was a perfect New York moment.
A perfect New York day.

I realize why people love this town in that instant. It is unlike anywhere else.....it should have its own gravititational force.....it is simply New York.

I know that " I heart NY!"

to be cont....

NY NY

What a wonderful town!

Monday, June 23......So we arrive by car; my mom, her husband, D and myself, through New Jersey...(yeesh it is all true, not a pretty place.) and then we hit the Lincoln Tunnel...
tee hee hee hee hee tada there is the skyline, right there as you come out into the light! Sooooooo exciting!

We drive into Times Square , one snail's pace car length at a time, and our NY home for the next week "The DoubleTree Guest Suites"
Check in amidst the noise, and hustle and bustle...(I feel a bit like I am inside Donald Duck's brain and he did acid..) and venture out onto the street. 48th and 7th, our corner.

Wow, first I am hit with the heat...the intense heat and humidity like a wall against you all the time, and then I notice the smell.
Yoinks-the smell knocks you over in Times Square. It isn't a constant smell, oh no, it wafts up from the deep dank bowels of the city and that is exactly what it smells like.
It took a little getting used to.
I have to say, my first day, I was not such a big fan of NY. I thought it was all like Times square and this country bumpkin was a little overwhelmed.
It is okay though...I got over it :)

We go for lunch at an Irish pub, all the staff are Spanish and D happilly chats in that language with them and then we walk...and walk...and walk some more. I can't stop spinning in circles and looking up...up...UP!

Once outside of Times Square the architecture truly hits me and I start to notice the iconic images everywhere....oh look there is Carnegie Hall....oh look there is the Dakota...oh look those are the towers from Ghostbusters... oh look it's the fountain from Friends...and on and on.

We take a carriage ride through Central Park, our horse billy and driver bruno, give us a great history of the area and then we head to the Stages deli for dinner......mmmmmmm pastrami and corned beef.....a mile and a half high!

My mom keep saying how quiet Times square is...I am ummmm...a little worried..."this is quiet?" yikes what does busy look like?

We wonder and shop and plan for the rest of the week.
D and I make it to Rupert's Deli outside the David Lettermen Show and rupert signs a tee for us. tee hee..."hey lady want to buy a monkey?"
and then the heat does us in and we call it a day cause i have 4 museums I want to get to on Tuesday.....( insert goofy music, little did I know how big 1 museum was)

More to come...

Monday, August 25

d rocks!

He makes the best food on a regular basis but his nachos,....lord luv a duck..his nachos are divine and I am eating them right now!!!

AWWWWWW....FREAK OUT!!!!!

well maybe just a little.
I have a secret....it is a little thing......something to be discussed quietly cause well we all know how super uber brave and courageous I am right?????...lolololololl!

I am a little afeared!
Just a bit, enough to keep me sharp and research ready for what may be....but along with all the excitement of the journey there is a little voice saying......

"what if you pack the wrong outfit?"

I mean come on, I direct for a living, plan the scene to be visually everything I imagine, the right lighting, sounds, costumes.....what if I imagine wrong and I get to Greece and everyone is in , hmmmmm, let's say leapoard print and I have packed turqouise and white flowy things?
You can see my dilemna.......

there is only one real solution......only one way to calm the voice of fear......

watch Shirley Valentine again...and speak to "wall"!

Saturday, August 23

Today is a good friend's wedding and my mom is finally meeting the breeder of Golden retrievers to get her puppy ( well once they are born ofcourse)

The wedding is exciting for all the good reasons why seeing a friend happy and with the person they are meant to be with does. A good party always help too :)
I hope there is sun for them this afternoon.
I raise a glass to the two of you!!!!!

The visit to the breeder is exciting because my mom has been pining for a dog since our family dog passed away in 1987.
Her hubby thought  ( much to my mother's chagrine) that they should wait to get another dog until they retired, as they travel a lot.

So now it is "D" day. They are to be approved by the breeders and put on a waitlist for the next available puppy. her hubby has been threatened to not blow it by sarcastic comments or they will be marching directly to the nearest SPCA and bringing home a dog today...lol!
Personally, I am a fan of rescue dogs, but she has her heart set on a golden.
Of course if there is a teenager available, they will happilly take that now.
It would be a wonderful distraction from my abscence for two months.
I am hoping for a teenager!

Paws are crossed!

Thursday, August 21

lists continued...

Okay, so I have one and it is long and I plan to spend the day trying to check most of it off....sigh...

Are lists in another language more interesting do you suppose?

On the upside......15 more sleeps til I leave!

Blonde ambition...

Well the only saying once a blonde always a blonde seems to be true.

I started life as a blonde and though I rebelled into the redheaded culture for the last 20 years...I welcomed being a blonde again for ease of travel upkeep.....

Blondes have more fun? Well maybe, maybe not, but I am willing to find out once more.

My Faery

Turning 40 this year was momentous simply because it is so welcome.
Gosh everything is a little easier when you say, "well... I'm 40"

To mark the occassion though, i did have a large tat done....a faery to carry with me forever.
Thank you to Gerry Kramer at Tattoo Zoo who made it so amazing.

Questions asked often...

did it hurt?
Well...yes and no...the foot....YES!
The leg.....more of an annoying awareness
Never enough to not have it done.

How long did it take?
It was done in two sessions, the first outline and shading about 3.5 hours and the second for colour about 3 hours.

Would you do it again?
Hell ya, wait til I turn 50!

Lists

I wonder.....
What did human beings do before the invention of  "THE LIST"?

I mean, how on earth did anything ever get done in a timely fashion, be remembered and be efficient?
What did we do with our time before it was listed, sorted, sanitized and organized?

I am willing to find out about now.
I am drowning in to do lists! Someone, send me a life jacket please.

Harumph....honestly, *rolls eyes at the very thought of one more list*

HAppy Birthday Madonna!!!!!!

50....REALLY??????

Oh my god, how did that happen.
Madona, 50, inconcievable!

The girl that taught me wearing my bra on the outside was cool, that gave me permission to add crinolins to my wardrobe, not just my dress up box....sigh......50.

I suppose it was meant to happen, I mean we are all aging right?
But how we allow an icon to go gently into the night? Well apparantly we don't.
Our icons are not allowed to age gracefully..NO, they must be tucked and botoxed and stretched into the image of them we have in our memories.
Shame really.
She has an opportunity to break the mold again here but she is succombing to the public pressure.

Madonna..Happy Birthday, my wish for you......be real...and show us all how naturally great 50 can be!

Next.....

Haven't written for a bit.
I needed some time to truly take in what the loss of my mentor and friend has meant.

Death has a funny way of sending you inwards, introspective and quiet.
I have felt a bit like the ground was shaken by this passing, disconnected someho however, the service of almost 500 people outside in a park, helped to remind me that time may pass, but the people you make authentic connections with don't disappear from your life, they are simply the echoes of your life, calling back to you when you need to hear their voices, never truly quiet or stilled.

I am 3 weeks away from leaving this town I know so well, the people, the places, the familiar....in order to head to a great unknown for truly the first time.

I can't help but think that this all happens for a reason and while looking inward for that reason I am reminded once again about the strength of inner calm and quietude.
J taught me that, and until his passing, I had let go of it a bit, not realizing that the very gift he gave me is so needed as I step out into my two months abroad.

I am excited and planning and uplanning and changing plans and can't quite believe it is coming so quickly.
Does everyone feel this life changing obsorption when they travel? Is that why it is so addictive?

I am about to discover things in the world I have only read about, things that I have only dreamt of......and yet....there is a calm included in my excitement that wasn't there two weeks ago.
A knowing that it is all as it should be, the universe is unfolding and like a lotus, just starting to reveal all it has to offer......

I am open........oh hell ya....I am open and ready!

in honor of....

There are people who come into your life for a season, a  reason, a time that changes you for the better forever and shows new ways of seeing the world.

I recently lost just such a person.

Back in 1994, while fresh eyed and super-feisty, I applied for a job at a local community centre.
I was interviewed by the co ordinator and hired to be a one on one worker.

Now let me also say, I was ready to battle the world head on, red headed and stubborn.....taking on every battle I came up against fighting for justice in every perceived injustice, fighting for life to be fair to young people. My goodness.... but it was exhausting.

While learning life lessons from the children I was working with, learning life isn't always fair to young people and older people alike; I moved up through the jobs, special needs worker, out of school care worker, superviser, acting OSC co ordinator.
This was stretched out across a turbulent 9 years, many staff changes and a co worker that made me want to pull out all my hair on a regular bases. Did I mention I was feisty?

The same man who hired me, became a trusted ally, the "go to" person when I thought I was going to simply explode in a fit of frustration or anger or sadness.
He taught me the art of listening first and reacting "appropriately", not just simply REACTING!
"Pick your battles" became a new mantra under his guidance and learn which ones have far reaching tentacles.
He gave me the gifts of respect and trust and always had time, even at the end of a 10 hour day, to hear out anyone who needed someone to care about the lives of children.

The community centre puts on regular events, seniors dinners, celebrations, etc.
There was not one event that I did not see J working hard at, washing dishes, handing out food, busy behind the scenes with a smile, his camera and all the patience of the world.
Never too above it in position to get down and dirty and do whatever little job needed to be done. Setting an impressive example for the rest of us.

Over 30 odd years, this man whom I so respect, moved up from being a youth worker, teacher community centre co ordinator,  to being the heart beat of this particular community.
Anyone who passed through the halls was touched in some way by J's passion, dedication, commitment and well.....his sense of humour. He had a wonderfully dark sense of humour.

There were days as OSC co ordinator, that I found it extremely difficult to find any decency left in humanity. It is not easy being a child and after a particularly hard day of disclosures of abuse or neglect, J could walk into my office, give me a long look, and strip away all the stoic pretense I was carrying, allowing me to be vulnerable and cry like a child.
He just had a way of looking at you that made you blubber.
It was crazy and it was so necessary.
Because of those moments, I have not become jaded as I was allowed to feel and not expected to suck it up.

I changed jobs in 2000.
I left the employment of the out of school care and embarked on a personal journey, creating a theatre company for children and youth.

It was during my goodbye speech, given by J, who coined the phrase...." You can take the girl out of the community centre, but you can't take the community out of the girl," that once again,  reduced me to tears I didn't know needed to shed, at goodbye.

Funny thing is, I never really left.
I continue to work at this community centre although wearing a different hat,  contracted now to bring music and theatre  programs to young people.
J always showed an interest in what I was up to, supported me through some challenging first years and availed me of opportunities to grow as a company.

I was recently hired to go back to my roots in out of school care and facilitate a workshop on guiding childhood behaviours, to the new OSC staff.
I was hired by J.
It  allowed me to complete a circle that began in his office all those years ago, bright eyed and super-feisty, well passionate.
It did not go unmentioned and I am glad I took a special moment to go and thank him for the continued faith, support and  the opportunity to make a difference.

I am  a little calmer now. Still super-feisty however, I do pick my battles more carefully,  ( a little too passionately sometimes);I try to take time to listen and then  react, and I do try to have an ear to those who need it, even if they don't know they need it, making time for people to be to feel.

This is the legacy created by one man, one heartbeat of a community.
I am not alone, I am but one voice whose life was touched by a ray of light that changes the colours of the world you see forever.

I am deeply sad that this heartbeat was taken, mid pulse, from  our community, much  too soon.

This is for him, a small note of tremendous appreciation and respect.
A thank you if you will.
The pulse carries on.

NEW FABULOUS TRAVEL SHOES....

Okay world...here I come...in these shoes....
and they don't smell like cat pee....and well, don''t tell D as he left the shoes in pee's way, but these are waaaaaay more comfy and I feel like I could climb a mountain in them.

cat pee and cork....

Yuch......

No one should have to start their day by putting their foot in a shoe full of cat pee.

Yes, that happened and I am just now recovering.

And not any shoes mind you, noooooooo......... they are my new and expensive, going travelling and needed to break in, shoes.
Sigh..I blame D...he knows this one spot in the house is a cat magnet and if the litter box is notto  the Duchess's liking she will look elsewhere. To D's credit , he has soaked and cleaned and we are hopeful the shoes can be salvaged..but...cork and leather.......I don't know.
it would not be fun to be on a train in Romania, sharing a berth with strangers and stinking of cat pee.....really...just not cool!

Sage gets thumbs up at vet...

Just home from show and D tells me that nothing worrying showed up on xray.....thyroid is fine..a titch low normal but nothing that needs medicine, we wiil watch....
My vet I believe, thinks the other dude seriously overeacted..can't believe they took 4 biopsies for an obvious staph infection and said if her 14 year old is in as good as sage as sage when he is 15, she will be happy.

D and Sage came home happy, went for a nice walk to the field with Niko...no issue with where she whacked herself and sage is just right as 15 year old rain.

We are breathing A lot easier.....Dr. P I think, was quite pissed at other yahoo vet she was polite but daiv said you copuld read between her lines,...lupus upset, ulcer orries, bladder stone upset etc..... she feels the inflamation and irritation sage occasionaly gets around her vagina could more than explain the red blood cells in the urine and even if it doesn't she sees nothing that is alarming and if anything looks worse we will go from there.

Ofcourse, she recognizes there may be things we can't see...but she does not see the need for any further testing..she trusts our knowing how sage is doing and will be available for us to come in the future as we need her. No indication of lumps....she had a very good feel and ran quite a few xrays ( at no cost to us) I know she feels crappy we spent so much on dioagnostics only to spin in wrong directions.

Yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayy! antijinx!

Sage is getting spoiled tonight.

Sage...dear old girl...

Poor old Sage gave herself a good whack yesterday.

Got out of bed too fast and banged her back end on the bed rail ( sage is our 15 year old Husky/chow cross)

She seems to be fine today but we thought she may have had a stroke or something at the time.

Sigh....she is getting older......she is slowing down.....she is still motoring about on her own 4 legs, and she is still telling everyone she is boss dog.
For now I am going to simply enjoy every single day and not look at it as a long goodbye, but rather a gift of learning to live in the moment together.

whew..and a week goes by...

I am constantly amazed at how much talent these kids I get to work with truly have.
In a mere 4 days, they have, researched, improvised, written and story boarded and created a theatre piece about the history of the Hudson Bay Company they are performing tomorrow.
They have also constructed all the shadow puppets, set pieces and accessories necessary for their performance.

I am in awe of the energy and focus.
I am also exhausted by it. The harder they work, the more they need from myself and my directing partner B.

They are fearless in their work and exploration and I love watching them grow as actors every day.

It isn't quite as much fun to watch them getting taller than me though....I hate being short!

Tuesday, July 22

They are trying to Kill Me!...

but it is a good kind of death.
Camp is going fantastic. these kids are outrageously talented and require so much of my team and I's brains that I come home more than a little fried...however what they are creating with all that....magic.

Sigh...I heart Tumbleweeds Theatre!

Monday, July 21

Summer camp ...

and so begins another year of theatre camp.

Car is loaded to the max full of fun things and supplies and puppets...lesson plans have been carefully prepared and I am singing the summer camp anthem...

"Are you ready for the summer..? Are you ready for the good times?

Why.,.....oh why has that song not left my head for 20 years?

Damn you Bill Murray!

Sunday sunshine and furries...

It is a gorgeous day here and I am making preparations for my theatre camp to start tomorrow.

The week settled into a lovely pace of friends and furries and time at home with D.

We picked up a funky mahogany sideboard for the kitchen which then involved changing the whole kitchen around, putting up some funky shelving cleaning like crazy.
No quick way to do that. it all looks great but now the need to pain the walls is strong and I must put off the feeling. It looks good though don't ya think?

I know the continuing New York saga awaits and I will keep posting that this evening.
for the moment,  Sage seems her usual Sagey self and even has some fur growing back on her shaved spots, Niko insists that every day should be Niko day...Flame squeaks for more food please A LOT, Abby is finding sunbeam upon sunbeam to nap in and Nesa has taken roost under the mallow bush, unless it is dinner time and then the furry train lines up in the hallway in order of noisiest ( that would be Flame).

I am off to pick up supplies for camp and enjoy some gardening time.....laters

have phrase book, will travel...

I just picked up my Western European phrase book, Paris ideas and Greek phrase book.
My European travels are now 6 weeks away.
I can't believe how quickly it is coming...Yay!!!!!!!!

I am a little trepidous but mostly ridiculously excited and it is all still a little surreal.

The plan is...2 months...

*Fly into Norwich, England and stay with S and her furries, and do much traversing, giggling and enjoying, then travel to the north of  Spain to see my friend K and her family.
* I head off to Santorini where S & S will join me along with P and we spend a week on the island before heading to Crete.
*I will say farewell to my travel buddies and strike out alone back up through the Greek Islands and the Pelloponese, to find my way to a train with my Eurorail pass and head across Europe, through Romania, Prague and back to Norwich.
*Paris, London and Amsterdam are in the works with A, who is living in Paris through the wind.
We will have cafe au laits and talk art and literature and giggle in Paris together.
I know this note is a bit of a list but, now you can see the adventures laid out here, that I will be writing about as I go.

I am soooooo grateful to the hearts of my friends abroad who are opening their doors to me allowing me not only a place to stay, but the confidence to go it alone, knowing that I have friendly faces whenever I need them.

this story will be continued..today I am very excited.

cheesesteak anyone?

Well, after a busy and crazy beginning of the week, I am finally taking a deep breath and continuing with my tale of Philly and New York.

First, car is home and well, Sage continues to gain strength from her infection and Grandma is dancing in her wheelchair ( seriously she was dancing when I went to see her yesterday) so officially relaxing.

Now....Philly, I left off with D and I and the family RAV and a GPS device called Garmin.
We drove fairly uneventfully to Philly for the day on Saturday June 21st.
We arrived in the beautiful historic district, parked and immediately went to Betsy Ross's house.
What an amazing tale she has, a feminist before her time, working in a basement on a flag that if caught, could have seen her condemned for treason and keeping a business running on her own, with or without a husband. Very cool woman.

We then decided the historic district and alllllll the people could wait, and went to Little Italy for a Philly Cheeseteak. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
It was a little like ordering soup from Seinfelds "the soup nazi" episode...but the guy screaming from behind the chrome covered corner shop, winked at me and let know he was doing it all for show. D stood in the spot the Rocky had ordered his cheesesteak in the first Rocky movie..lolololol.

A quick stop in a bar....( I needed a  bathroom and there nothing around ) saw a couple of old withered and leather skinned men slapping each other......lol.....it was pretty funny but we opted to not have a beer there.

We then head to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, at least we would have had D listened to me and NOT the Garmin for directions, once we arrived at the parking lot.
Instead he drove in a circle, away from parking, and ended up in a detour that took us 90 minutes and several worried moments, through the really low rent districts of Philly, complete with visable guns, bullet holed, burned out cars and wow....if I hadn't been so mad at D for not listening to me, I may have been scared.

We did eventually find our way back to the Museum and the parking lot we had almost entered originally and spent a fantastic 4 hours with Degas, Renoir, etc...etc...etc...

Absolutely phenomenal. I can't tell you what it was like to see the brushstrokes, the textures, the energy, the colours, the everything about these works I had seen only on slides or in books.

There were these wonderfully knowledgable security guards who helped us to find our faves and there was one man who looked like he had lived his whole life inside the museum. He had a little leather bound black book full of noted about the art, the artists and the people who honor them. Very cool guy. I asked him to direct me to Cezanne, and without missing a beat, knew exactly where the painting I was looking for and led me there.
Awe struck and emotional we leave the museum and head back into town for dinner.

Night looked a lot different downtown and we opted to park H and E's car in a secured parking lot before finding a wicked retro diner "The Continental" The best lobster risotto ever....EVER!

The adventures seem to be done for the dat and we head for home trusting the voive of Garmin to lead us there......after "recalculating" a few times and getting us onto a freeway she promptly ran out of juice leaving us without directions home......UH OH!

We did manage to get there eventually, but first found ourselves in some crazy wooded areas of the Pennsylvania subarbs and a lot of gas stations who had neither a bathroom or an English speaking attendant who could help us... OI!

Much after dark, we finally made it home and shared our tales with the family.

Sunday June 22nd and D wants to go back to the Outlet mall for more shopping. I tell ya, he can shop better than I can. and we have a nice end to our time in Philly.

One more sleep will see us driving into NY and the smells, sights, sounds, sweat, splendour of the city.

More to come.....

Wednesday, July 16

good morning sunshine!

I hope you are now singing that song...loving that song...singing a song..... hee hee hee.

It is time for some serious work stuff today. I am building a show based on a historical building here in town and have to get serious about some of the planning and such.
Meeting with my pop today who will be involved in the design..pop ...hmmmm..now he is a long story to share, not today perhaps.

Last night saw a good friend of ours come by for BbQ.
We played music and ate good food and indulged in party favours and had a great evening.
What is it that enables old friends to come together after time apart and pick right back up where you left off?

There is something wonderfully comforting in recognizing that, and simply enjoying the moment when you reconnect.

Breakfast calls........ciao.

Tuesday, July 15

A brand new day!

Well today shines a little brighter all around....hoping that it shapes up to everything and everyone being given clean bills of health and that the sun washes away yesterdays woes!

We are getting a new/old piece of furniture for our kitchen.
A really nice mahogany sideboard that we are putting in instead of new wall cupboards.
Much more personality.

Now if I could just get D put the lids on things after he uses them, perhaps the kitchen would stay a little tidier?

Well hope springs eternal.

Monday, July 14

whew...

That was a big crazy day, but grandma seems to be okay, bruised but not broken...

sage (my dog) does not have bladder stones..yay...and my car is in the shop...

sigh....I am exhausted.

laters...

crap!

Well one year after the great grandma debaucle, it looks like we are at it again.
she seems to make a habit of having terrible thing befall her while my mother is out of town and i am in charge.
Last year while still in independant living, she fell resulting in needing a new home, adn ER/hosptial stay and a lot of advocating for, while my mom was in Australia for a month.
She ended up settling into a great place, but it took a horrificly large mountain to move to make that happen and most of 8 months to see to fruition.

Now mom's been gone 4 days, and grandma has had another fall.....she seems to be fine but I can feel the stressing rising like the sun right now.

My mom simply is not allowed to go away in July anymore.

I am going to go and see grandma today and see that she is fine for myslef.
Ugh....poor grandma.

Sunday, July 13

New York New York....and all things NY

Okay so I am recently back from my first adventure of the summer to New York City and Philadelphia.

I wanted to write it all down in one place as it was such a big adventure but you will have to bare with me, I am going to do it in sort of a reverse diary...going back in time and starting with day 1...

day 1 June 19th, 2008
Leave victoria at 4:00am..ugh, no sleep following a show going up that I directed on the 18th...a busy time.

We fly into Philadelphia on one of those little airbuses that gets you there but offers very little for amenities, including two working toilets....ugh....one broke down and we had line ups up the aisle for the only other remaining toilet for 6 hours.

Arrive in Philly...yay safely, and transfer bodies and luggage to our rental van. D and I are travelling with my Mom and R, her husband, and he is treating us to this vacation.

Drive mostly uneventfully to step sis and her hubby E and their 2 children's place in the area of Richboro PA, about an hour NE of Philly and visit and catch up on sleep.

impressions...a lot of driving to get anywhere...wow!
It is beautiful though and a lot...A LOT  of flags and bunting.

Friday June 20th....drive my mom and D and I to outlet mall for shopping. Really what else do you do????

D, being a better shopper than my mom and I, purchases a whole new wardrobe from perry ellis and ralph lauren for what some might spend on a pair of jeans...nice sales! Considering he packed 1 pair of pants, 1 tee shirt, 1 pair of boxers and socks, and 1 suit jacket for 12 days ( really Kimmee it's all I'll need)........it was good we shopped...MEN! he also needed to purchase a new duffel bag as the SMALL knapsack he brought was not big enough to get said purchases to NY.

Myself I opt for looky-looing and cotton bras.  let's hear it for Lane Bryant!
Not exciting but soooooo comfy in the heat.
OI the heat, have I mentioned that yet?
94 degrees and 74% humidity...OI the heat.

really diving from one air conditioned environment to another is the only way to be.

We borrowed H ( step sis's) car and the family GPS device, Garmin.....
what a trip...I got used to hearing " recalculating" a lot.....and found our way there and back with minimal effort.
Oh forgot...We had a great lunch first. H took us out to local vegan restaurant...yummmm and aside from a delightful, puking 18  month old ( my nephew) it was a good meal. The D and Mom and I took off to outlet mall.

The day went on without incident and had yummy BBQ and video night.

Day 3, June 21st
D and I drive, alone, into Philly for day........just me and daiv the borrowed car and the Garmin...can you gues how many times we heard 're calculating" from it over the day?

to be cont....
